Our new neighbourhood is pretty rad. It's quite a bit more "urban" than Baturyn
and while I do miss the tree lined streets, all I have to do is cross the road and I'm
in a neighbourhood that provides the necessity. When we first moved here the crime stats were a little higher but my old neighbourhood has experienced a bit of a surge
and there is really no difference anymore.
That's not to say we weren't unnerved when we experienced some crime. Of the mildest short, luckily.
Our house lies in such a spot that it makes a convenient shortcut. My daughter caught the first person coming through our yard-they quietly backed away without incident. I saw the second person just as they were leaving the yard and that was enough of that shit. On went the locks! I just can't understand the gall of some people. I would have NEVER cut through a yard like that. As long as the gates are locked, the assholes stay out it seems.
We learned this the hard way of course. We locked the back gates but that didn't stop someone from coming into the yard through the front and rifling through the truck. They were neat about it and didn't take anything as there was nothing left in there to take! A few nights later though someone stole our extension cord. Just pulled it through the back fence. I laughed and laughed about that one. And then got mad and vowed to get a large, fierce outside dog!
I haven't as of yet but a surveillance camera and lots of obnoxious lighting is in our future as money permits.
Despite the rough beginnings, I like it here, I'm close to all sorts of little shops, the library, parks...there are a good mix of people here and we don't feel unsafe walking around, day or night. In short, we made the right decision. No buyer's remorse here!
